Travel article based on our experience visiting the Giant Buddha in Hong Kong

One of the highlights of our recent trip to Hong Kong was visiting Lantau Island, the largest in Hong Kong, and catching a glimpse of the awe-inspiring Giant Buddha, which is said to be the world’s largest outdoor seated bronze Buddha. It is definitely an understatement to say that looking up at the enormous statue was an emotional moment for us, especially for my husband, who was a Buddhist before he converted to Christianity.

Giant Buddha fast facts

We learned from our guide that Hong Kong’s giant Buddha is actually known as Tian Tan Buddha. It sits on top of the Muyushan Mountain, which literally translates to Phoenix Mountain. We felt so privileged to learn that it houses some of the remains of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha.

Perhaps this was why the Giant Buddha was placed on such a high position—to symbolize the reverence and respect that people should give it. However, tourists who wish to get a closer view may climb up the 268 steps to reach the platform where the Buddha can be found.

Stunning view

Climbing up towards the Giant Buddha was no easy task, but we forgot the exhaustion when we saw the view. The undeniably blue (foggy, at that time) skies and the magnificent mountain tops contributed to the sense of serenity we got from the whole experience.

It is no wonder that tourists and locals alike flock to this island. Lantau is a place to renew their faith, to breathe in the calm, and to escape the frenzy of the outside world.
