The street was wet from rain early in the evening. The city smelled of dirt, Italian food, and smoke coming from the group of middle-aged men sitting outside of Cafe Havana. I carefully watched my steps while I walked past them. My flaked, pink Cutex on my toenails shone against dark cement. If Imelda Marcos were around, she’d instantly use “ugly” to describe them and maybe shot me a sorry look, as if to suggest that in this world, only the good, true and beautiful must be observed. I frowned. It’s time to get a pedicure.

I carried my big straw bag while groping for my phone beneath sheets of yellow paper, book, and cosmetics. The small, flowery sequins on my blouse glittered in the dark, and scintillated with light coming from a Revo. I hurriedly walked through Greenbelt 1 until I reached Prince Plaza. Read more »
