I snapped these photos while exploring a part of New Territories in Hong Kong during our visit last year. I was organizing our photo library today and thought I’d share these with you.

Things to Do in Hong Kong – Po Lin Monastery and the Wisdom Path

We’ve been away three times since March that we didn’t have much time to blog. So today’s blog will still be about Hong Kong (yes, we did a lot of things in HK!), focusing on the charming and old-fashioned Po Lin Monastery, which is a must-visit for anyone who wishes to see the other side–the more laid back side–of Hong Kong. In fact, this monastery may catch you by surprise.

Lantau Island is where people go for a restful weekend trip–oftentimes a wise decision to escape the usual weekday hoo-has in the city. Lantau has so much to offer to those who want to experience nature and be awed by majestic sights along meandering mountainsides. The island bursts with color and culture of ancient China that it was impossible for us not to take as many pictures as we possibly could.

Hong Kong: A Shopping Mecca for Everyone

shopaholic1 Hong Kong: A Shopping Mecca for Everyone

Today’s blog is devoted to shopaholics who are in search for the perfect shopping Mecca. Although some may disagree, Hong Kong just screams shopping galore so there’s no doubt that it should be in your list of top shopping destinations in the world. When you are in Hong Kong, you are always besieged by signs that say, “50% off,” “Removal sale!” “Winter sale,” “Last Day Sale!” Name it, they have it.

For gadgetholics like us

Hong Kong is the first place that comes to mind when we need electronics. It’s common knowledge that gadgets in Hong Kong have the lowest rates because of the 0% sales tax policy. For instance, I got my Macbook Pro 17″ at $500 cheaper than the price in Manila. They also threw in some freebies such as bluetooth mouse, mouse pad, upgraded my memory, and gave me a laptop case. My husband also got a good deal for his Nikon D300 at $400 cheaper than the market rate. My Canon IXUS was also bought for a much lesser price. It was a lot of savings considering all freebies we got!

The Rustic Charm of Tai O Fishing Village

We didn’t want to limit our Hong Kong trip to treading around the thickly-populated areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island (although nothing beats their ultra-gratifying dumplings and seafood noodles). This time, we alloted several days to explore the more placid areas like Lantau. We wanted to maintain our famous equanimity as much as possible. After all, we were on a litte R and R.

Our visit to Lantau Island was not complete without dropping by the most revered Tai O Fishing Village. When we were told to visit this century-old place, we didn’t think twice.

Meeting Hong Kong’s Giant Buddha

One of the highlights of our recent trip to Hong Kong was visiting Lantau Island, the largest in Hong Kong, and catching a glimpse of the awe-inspiring Giant Buddha, which is said to be the world’s largest outdoor seated bronze Buddha. It is definitely an understatement to say that looking up at the enormous statue was an emotional moment for us, especially for my husband, who was a Buddhist before he converted to Christianity.

We learned from our guide that Hong Kong’s giant Buddha is actually known as Tian Tan Buddha. It sits on top of the Muyushan Mountain, which literally translates to Phoenix Mountain. We felt so privileged to learn that it houses some of the remains of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha. [Read more...]

Top 3 Must-Try Restaurants in Hong Kong

My husband and I are avid foodies—we love discovering new places to eat and try exotic dishes. The best food discoveries usually happen when you least expect it and you’ll never really know what’s in store for you unless you try. When we recently went to Hong Kong, finding great restaurants was definitely a priority.

Here are some of the restaurants you must try to visit when you are in Hong Kong:

1. Hutong

Hutong is located on the 28th floor of a modern high-rise in Kowloon. Its down-to-earth and dramatic ambiance provides a romantic setting to guests and wine connoisseurs alike. Notable are grand windows that stretch from the floor to the ceiling, adding to this joint’s elegant charm. The menu is Chinese with a modern twist, and main dishes cost around $HK128 – HK$ 288 or around $17 – $37 US. Hutong’s exotic dishes make this fine-dining restaurant extremely popular to locals and tourists that reservations are absolutely required before going there.
