Unlocked Apple iPhone…welcome to the Philippines!
While the rest of world focuses on the number of iPhones sold (more than 1,000,000 thus far in case you’re wondering) since its launch in the United States on June 29th, there is a core group of hackers who is determined to unshackle the iPhone from the AT&T Network. Some have relied on hardware tweaks while others have chosen a less evasive route: software hack. At this point in time, hacking the iPhone is not for the faint of heart. One must be comfortable with Unix tools and freeware applications that are light on how-to instructions and heavy on command-line coding. But, for those who are up to the challenge, it is worth the effort.
I’m delighted to report that I have successfully hacked the Apple iPhone to work on the Philippines’ GSM network Globe, Smart and Sun. Here are the photos of the unlocked iPhone:
In all, it took me more than one day to accomplish the task. I can now make calls, text, browse the Internet, and listen to my iPod. If that weren’t enough, I could download the rapidly growing list of software (many of which are free for the taking) found on the more than 144,000,000 sites devoted to everything iPhones. The two applications that do not work on my iPhone are YouTube and voicemail, obviously because they are connected to the AT&T Network. We also prepared a video demo of the unlocked iPhone. Enjoy! Meanwhile, it’s time to get some zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Note: the process of unlocking is kinda complex but if you are resourceful enough to search for hacks online, you will successfully do it!

I am too trying to unlock my brand new (never been AT&T activated) iPhone using the free software from iPhone Dev Team.
I am encountering the problem of not being able to complete the pre-hack since I am unable to get the iPhone to connect to any open WiFi network.
These are the steps before the actual unlock hack. I am just reaching the point where I am suppose to connect to the iPhone via SSH to transfer the iUnlock program to the iPhone. Since I cannot get the iPhone to connect to any WiFi network let alone the same network that my Mac is on. I cannot transfer the file to complete the hack.
Did you encounter any problems prior to the Unlock hack with connecting to a WiFi network?

Sorry for the short reply to your question earlier. I was overwhelmed with questions about unlocking the iPhone.
Please help me to better understand where in the process of unlocking your iPhone you are. I’m assuming you are running iTune 7.4.1, have updated your iPhone firmware to 1.0.2, and have disabled iTunes Helper. Are you using the application called “iNdependence” to “jailbreak” your iPhone? If so, have you gotten as far as 1) putting the “PEM” file onto your iPhone, 2) “Generate Activation” and 3) “Activate Phone”? Once you have completed all these steps, you should have access to the applications on your iPhone including “Settings” where you can select which WiFi network to log into.

I don’t think there are authorized resellers in the country for now but are some private individuals who are selling them for P35,000 each (I think I saw this on philmug.com). Just search them on Google.

Wheew….After a long time of all those people concentrating on selling the iphone… I was able to focus on how to make it work here in the philippines… im so happy now that it works not only as the pre ipod sounds & veideo player but it works for good & i mean For GOOD… It took me less than a day getting my hands on the net & gathering all resources i could to get it unlocked… To all you there… wait & ill be divising a particular site that will have those unlock codecs…

Needed:
wInstaller
iBrickr
PACAY by brasuco (newer)
unlock.pxl (included one is modified with the faster iUnlock)

1. Plug iPhone into iTunes (Keep original ATT sim in the iPhone) - Wait Till iTunes Recognizes it.
2. Hold On and Home Buttons Together for 20 seconds until the Yellow ! Triangles Appears
3. iTunes will say it found an iPhone that needs to be restored, click ok and then click restore. iTunes will then download 1.02 (or check to see if its on your machine) and update your iPhone. Wait till its finished.
4. Run wInstallerGUI.exe and click Jailbreak (it will jailbreak your phone) - close wInstaller
5. Run PACAY’s (CLICK HERE) activate.bat
6. Run ibrickr.exe and choose Applications (it may have you set it up the PXL).
7. In ibrickr -> Applications -> Install from PXL
8. Choose Unlock-fast.pxl
9. Let it do its thing. Your iphone lock itself when its done.
10. On the iPhone: Settings -> GENERAL -> Auto-Lock -> NEVER
11. Turn off iPhone Completely (hold on/off then slide the bar) - Turn it on again
12. Run the Unlock App.
13. Click Start
14. Let it RUN!!! It will tell you when it is “Complete”
15. When its done, Exit the program to the Springboard
16. Eject your simCard slot and do a Full turn off (hold on/off then slide the bar).
17. Put in your new simCard and turn the iPhone ON!
18. Run PACAY’s activate.bat AGAIN (fix youtube again)
19. Run iBrickr again Applications-> on the RIght hand side on the iPhone thingie, click the minus next to unlock to uninstall it.
20. U.S. ONLY: SETTINGS -> GENERAL -> NETWORK -> EDGE (ENTER YOUR EDGE SETTINGS)
DONE!

Oh well… ayoko namang maging madamot regarding the unlock instructions i did to unlock my iphone… Besides i checked w/ PhilMug & they are charging 7k - 14k for simply unlocking these kinds of phone… this is the simple steps
1) Download and run AppTapp from http://iphone.nullriver.com/ (both Windows and Mac versions available)
2) Run Installer.app from your iPhone and select to install “Community Sources” from the list
3) Open Mobile Safari from your iPhone and go to http://tinyurl.com/2uj9mc
4) You will get a notice asking you to add the iPhoneSimFree repository to your Installer. Just accept and you will now have SimFree.app in the Unlocking Category of Installer

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article ked Apple iPhone in the Philippines, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.

Any sim will work initially. But you’ll need to ‘unlock’ iTunes first (yes, that’s right, unlock iTunes) to get past the activation screen of your iPhone. Google can help you with that. There’s always the harder way around that activation screen, the option is yours. And pay attention to the version of iTunes you’re using to unlock and upgrade the firmware!
As for the iPhone, pinoy-style setting, it’s SEVERELY LACKING. No speed dial, no group txt sending, no quick access to contacts, no txt forwarding, no custom msg tones, no voice dial and the list goes on! Stuff that are standard in other phones that we take for granted aren’t here. Plus, no option to use a phone-style interface when composing messages. Let’s see you txt somebody while driving! (Which is probably a good thing to not do while operating a vehicle. But!… LOL!)
In the end, it’s probably more for show than anything else. That’s why I’m still keeping my O2 mini close by. As for surfing, the thing is just plain awesome with wifi. You’d probably not use your laptop that often anymore. And there’s Youtube and push mail, I’m a converted fan!
In the end, for the US$299+tax I paid for the 4gb model, it’ll do fine. But I suggest you keep whatever phone you have now just in case.

Did you purchase your iPhone from an Apple or an AT&T store in the States? If so, your iPhone should come with an AT&T sim card already installed. The sim slot is located at the top of your iPhone, between the headphone jack and the power button.

I concur that the iPhone phone lacks some features that come standard on other phones. As such, those who plan to use the iPhone mostly for the phone part of it will be extremely disappointed. For the rest of us who plans to browse the Internet, listen to some great tunes, run some applications, make and receive calls and text friends while on the go, the iPhone is an indispensable, all-in-one, super-cool gadget. Lastly, please don’t drive and text.

The iPhone 1.1.1 update , released Thursday, breaks phones that have been hacked so that they work with providers other than AT&T, the only U.S. provider Apple has allowed to carry its mobile phones.

Stumbled in this site again while trying to get GPRS working (for Globe, since I managed to get Tmobile working.)
Just so you guys know, the newest firmware is already 1.1.2. And the baseband is not compatible with 1.1.1. This means there’s no way to hack (Yet!) this new firmware since they patched the exploit already.
I found out the hard way when I was upgrading several of my friends’ iphones last weekend. The first three went fine from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1. The last one, malas! Apple snuck in the newest version while I was in the process of upgrading the firmware.
There is hope though. And you can go back to 1.1.1 from 1.1.2. The process is a little bit more involved but it works.
This is just a heads up to those purchasing iPhones from Apple stores. Expect the new firmware to hit anytime soon.
